Pots that enhance everyday routines. Functional forms that embrace the earthy nature of clay and honor the beauty of imperfection. Nothing better than a cup that fits the hand just so.
I was introduced to the wheel while finishing a design degree at RIT. What began as a third-year elective, turned into a lifelong love.
After graduating, I found connection and continued education at Flower City Arts Center. So many talented and committed instructors have made a lasting imprint on my approach and point of view. I was introduced to cone 10 reduction firing and fell in love with the rich, earthy quality that is drawn from clay in that atmosphere.
These days I am doing my making in my home studio—continuing to experiment with clay bodies, surface design and glaze techniques. The transition to cone 6 oxidation has been an exercise in patience—one that I continue to hone. But it has challenged me to expand my understanding and develop new methods to achieve the natural, organic outcomes I’m drawn to.
My work is the outcome of a desire to reflect the natural world in simple forms that we use in our daily lives. Enhancing everyday tasks and bringing meaning to the mundane offers an opportunity to connect us to moments we’d typically let pass by.
And there’s just something about taking a lump of dirt, forming it, firing it, and then ladling some soup in it, that feels so satisfying to me 😌
